Don't slip and fall! Fellow Disco Out and About Driving Looking back Unloaded the groceries

Ice Storm 2006

It doesn't happen often but every once in a while we get weather that is truly once a decade. This was the case with the Big Ice Storm of 2006. I haven't seen ice like this since 1987. The weather guys in OKC want to report on the ice storm of 2001 and 2002. I hardly remember them. And I don't think they were like this storm. Nearly 4 weeks after this storm the rural power cooperatives finally got all the power back on from the downed lines. That's a big storm.
So what does one do when the ice comes down and forms a 4 inch thick sheet on everything? Why go to the grocery store of course! It's where everyone goes when there is a chance to have your power go out. Why not fill the refrigerator with perishable foods like milk and meat? So I went out to make sure the Disco was ready. I had parked facing north and put the ceramic heater in her to melt anything that would settle on her. And it was a good thing too. Here the kids are going out to get in. Don't slip and fall kids.
The roads were mostly devoid of traffic. We did encounter another white Discovery. Sitting in the street across from the Braum's Ice Cream on Porter and Robinson waiting on someone who they were obviously taxiing around in the slick.
As you can guess we didn't have any trouble. Here we are heading north back to the house. The roads were totally covered with ice and were slick but passable. RovErica was snapping left and right and got this one looking out the back.
At some point the "ice rating" of your tires comes into question. My son-in-law and daughter came over later that day. They parked in the driveway. And an hour later I was looking out the front of the house and their Ford Explore Trac was sitting in the street. I asked Justin if he had parked out in the street. He said, "No, in the driveway." He was parked in the same place you see my Disco in this picture. But his truck had slid out into the street while mine like a spider on a ceiling held fast. So if this is important to you be sure and check how your tires perform in the ice as well as the rain, mud, etc...
I spent the rest of the day in the warm, capturing the falling snow and ice through the various pieces of cut glass in the front door. One of which turned out nice enough to be the Christmas Card Picture for 2006.
Thanks for reading and happy Rovering.
